But how was the town of Alassio born? An ancient legend revolves around his birth...

It starts with the thwarted love of Adelasia, daughter of Otto I of Saxony and Aleramo, a young court cupbearer. The young lovers, being denied their love, fled from Germany and reached the Ligurian coast, where they hid in a bay with a few fishermen's houses. Thanks to the valor and courage shown in battle by Aleramo Ottone went down to Albenga and reconciled with the couple. There, where Adelasia and Aleramo had settled, a city arose, which in honor of the princess was called Alaxia which later became Alassio. This is the fantastic legend linked to the birth of the beautiful Ligurian town.

In fact, the center of Alassio was born around the year 1000, when the first inhabitants came down from the hill and settled near the beach, most likely taking advantage of a small moment of respite in the Saracen raids.

Over the years many commercial activities developed, thanks also to the boats that were stationed in the bay to unload and load the goods that were stowed in the warehouses.

Napoleon's threat led to a crisis between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, also due to the shifting of trade routes.

Around the nineteenth century, Alassio returned to being a modest fishing village and many inhabitants found themselves forced to look for work in the traps scattered around the Mediterranean.

The turning point came in 1872, when the railway line opened: for the town economy it was the beginning of a new era. The British arrived with the train and they were so conquered by the climate, the sea, the unspoiled nature, that they decided to buy land plots and build villas to spend the winter there.

Thanks to the arrival of the English, the Anglican church, the English library, the tennis club, hilltop villas and hotels will be built, as well as clubs, tea rooms and a casino. The modest fishing village thus becomes one of the most famous tourist centers in all of Europe.

The tourist vocation of Alassio continues in the 50s and 60s: the era of the famous "dolce Vita" of Alassio. The nucleus is the Caffè Roma where the most famous names of the show performed. In the same period the Miss Muretto beauty contest was born and the Muretto designed by Mario Berrino and Ernest Hemingway who signed the first tile, which later became the symbol of Alassio.
