Ospedaletti is the "pearl" of the Riviera
Ospedaletti, famous for its roses and carnations is situated on the Ligurian coast between Sanremo and Bordighera on the Italian/French border. This jewel of the Italian Riviera was the site of the first flower market in Europe. It has been a perfumed delight for visitors ever since, with shady walks through flower gardens under pine, palm and eucalyptus trees. The town takes its name from a hospice for pilgrims founded in the 14th century by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. With southerly views over the Mediterranean and shelter from the north by high ground and pine trees, the location is unrivalled. Due to its location and southerly aspect Ospedaletti enjoys an all year round “micro climate”. It is not at all unusual to be taking lunch outside on the beach front in January. With its Balsamic air and mild temperatures Ospedaletti is most definitely a place to be enjoyed all year round. Because of the year round temperate climate it became an important health resort for royalty and the rich and famous of the day. Guided both by their doctors and arbiters of style, the aristocracy of Europe stayed during winter months in this lovely village. Once patronized by the international high society, both the aristocracy of central Europe and the elite of world culture (Villa Sultana was the first gambling casino in Italy; already open in 1886, it was closed in 1924).
The future of Ospedaletti is the new "Marina di Baia Verde" in phase of construction with a modern little Port, new shops, an Hotel with Spa, a huge botanic garden and a totally redesigned waterfront...
The charming and historic town centre extends down to the sea with its delightful fisherman's cottages lining the beach. Excellent restaurants and cafes can be found here as well as in the residential area which is surrounded by colourful gardens. The population of approximately 3,650 may count as many as 10,000 during the summer months. The town of Ospedaletti extends to approximately 514 hectares and benefits from protection from cold northerly winds by the surrounding hills and the sheltered natural bay. The town enjoys exceptional weather for the area even during winter months, with a yearly average of 300 days of full sun, and average temperatures of 15° in the winter and 24° in the summer. Being south facing the tranquil bay of Ospedaletti enjoys maximum exposure to the sun with a high average of days and hours of sun even during the winter.
Frequent bus services connect Ospedaletti with Ventimiglia, Sanremo and the charming town of Bordighera. Sanremo station is only a few minutes away, as is the Italian Autostrada giving fast access to the international airport at Nice (35 min drive) in one direction and Genoa and Tuscany in the other.
