The Mediaeval villages of these valleys have managed to protect and conserve delightful secluded spots that have remained unchanged for centuries. They are embellished with monumental religious and lay buildings, which often conserve fine works of art. The romanesque or late Mediaeval churches have nearly all been subjected to alterations, particularly in the baroque period, when it was decided to systematically and sumptuously renew the style of decoration. Few of the castles (e.g. those of Apricale and Isolabona) are still practicable and adapted. One of the most interesting architectural feature of Isolabona is the octagonal fountain (1486) in the old centre. Formerly governed by the Doria family, Isolabona was built in a strategic position and is defended by a castle with square-shaped keep. The castle, now restored to its original splendour, is the setting for important artistic and cultural events during the Summer.
